Spring Into Space; Why Open-Plan Living Could Transform Your Home.
When it comes to preserving the character of period properties, few elements require as much care and expertise as traditional flint walls. At Point Builders, our 40+ years of experience in restoring listed and heritage buildings has taught us that these distinctive features demand specialist knowledge and the careful application of traditional building techniques.
Understanding Traditional Flint Wall Construction
Flint walls are a hallmark of vernacular architecture across southern England, particularly in Hertfordshire and Dorset, where we operate. These walls combine knapped flints with lime mortar to create durable, breathable structures that have stood for centuries. However, modern cement-based materials can cause irreversible damage to this historic fabric.
Our Specialist Approach to Flint Restoration
Our team at Point Builders takes immense pride in our ability to restore flint walls correctly. As demonstrated in our project at The Crow in St. Albans, we carry out specialist lime re-pointing to existing flint and brickwork, ensuring the breathability of the wall is maintained while preserving its authentic appearance.

Why Traditional Lime Matters for Flint Walls
Modern cement mortars trap moisture within flint walls, leading to spalling and structural deterioration. Our craftsmen understand that only properly formulated lime mortar allows these walls to breathe and flex naturally. This traditional approach won us the Trevelyan Award from St. Albans Civic Society for the Best Restoration Work of 2016.
Integrating Modern Comfort with Historic Fabric
While preserving original flint walls, we often incorporate sympathetic upgrades. At The Crow, we successfully combined heritage conservation with modern comfort by insulating existing timber frame walls with wood wool boards and hemp plaster, and installing underfloor heating beneath breathable lime screed.
Our Commitment to Traditional Craftsmanship
As members of the Federation of Master Builders and TrustMark, we ensure every flint wall restoration meets the highest standards. Our team includes highly trained craftsmen who specialise in period properties, from private homes to churches and barn conversions across our operating areas.
